It's Our Way of Life

It's our way of life to protect ourselves and those we love. That's why we're committed to helping make protection from the sun part of our way of life.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Australia and the most expensive to treat. One Australian is diagnosed with skin cancer every 90 seconds and more than $200million spent annually on treatments. However, with regular checkups and the adoption of sun safety practices, this disease is largely preventable.

Suncorp has developed SunWise to help educate the community about the dangers of sun exposure, at the same time changing behaviour with prevention programs, and providing support for valuable research to help defeat this disease.

Suncorp SunWise Ambassador, Adam Gilchrist has thrown his support behind the program to teach others about the dangers of skin cancer and the vital importance of prevention.

Adam Gilchrist - WA Suncorp SunWise Ambassador

Adam GilchristAs Suncorp SunWise Ambassador, legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist will temporarily swap his Baggy Green in favour of a wide brimmed hat as he sets out to shed light on the importance of sun safety and skin cancer prevention in Western Australia.

"I'm both proud and privileged to be supporting such a vital project," Adam said.

"As a professional cricketer who has spent most of my entire adult life outdoors, I have always been acutely aware of the need to properly protect myself against the sun.

"Western Australia unfortunately tops the order just behind Queensland in the rate of skin cancer development and that's certainly not something we should hang our hat on.

"Prevention is crucial and providing shade is just one way Suncorp is helping people across our state to protect themselves from the dangers of the sun."

Adam holds the world record for a wicketkeeper after playing 96 consecutive Tests without ever being dropped for form or injury.

Regarded by critics worldwide as the greatest wicketkeeper/batsman to have ever played the game, Adam also lays claim to the most sixes hit in Test cricket (97).

"For my entire working life I have submitted to yearly and sometimes twice-yearly skin checks as have most of my team-mates," Adam said.

"At home, Mel and I always try and make sure that our kids wear hats in the sun and have proper clothing and sun protection creams on them throughout the day."

An inspiring team player, Adam has taken over an astonishing 400 dismissals in one day internationals and scored over 8699 runs at a phenomenal strike rate of almost 97 runs per 100 balls. Adam appreciates better than most that there is no easy answer and no easy way to
achieve success.

In 2004 Adam was selected in Richie Benaud's All Time Greatest Team sharing the illustrious honour with fellow Australians Sir Donald Bradman, Dennis Lillee and Shane Warne.
