Rugby league great and Suncorp SunWise Ambassador Shane Webcke added some muscle to a Prep School tree planting event at Wondall Heights State School today.

The towering league legend rolled up his sleeves to help 25 of the school's smallest students plant a tree that will grow with them over their primary school years and protect future generations from skin cancer.

Mr Webcke joined Education and Training Minister Rod Welford for the tree planting day which will create a new row of shade near the school's tennis and basketball courts to shield spectators from the sun.

The tree planting day was part of a prize package awarded to the school for being named the Encouragement Award winner of the Suncorp SunWise Smart Moves Challenge. The school was awarded the prize based on the spirited entry produced and submitted by Class 6W.

The prize, provided by Suncorp, included a shade audit by prize-winning architect John Greenwood who identified the best location for the 25 new shade trees after assessing the school's need for additional sun protection.

Shane congratulated Wondall Heights State School on its achievement and emphasised the importance of skin cancer prevention within schools.

"Sun safety is an issue very close to me, with both my wife and mother being previously affected by skin cancer. The Suncorp SunWise Smart Moves Challenge is helping schools like Wondall Heights be very progressive through planning ahead to protect future generations of students from the sun," he said.

Mr Welford said it was fantastic to see all the different activities students are participating in to become active and healthy.

"The Smart Moves policy that I launched this year is all about ensuring students exercise their bodies and brains every day in school.

"Congratulations to everyone at Wondall Heights State School for their innovative school-based physical activity programs.

The state-wide Challenge called on Queensland students to submit a 90 second video clip of the sun safe physical activities in which their class, friends or sporting teams participate.

The school which submitted the strongest video entry each month from May to September was selected as a winner, each receiving a Suncorp SunWise Shade Tent valued at more than $4,000 and an NRL football signed by Shane Webcke.

The Suncorp SunWise Smart Moves Challenge winning schools are Maroon State School (May), Coorparoo State School (June), Mackay District Special School (July) and Coombabah State School (August).
