Queensland Institute of Medical Research

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) is one of the largest medical research institutes in the southern hemisphere, and is recognised worldwide for the quality of its research. QIMR's scope includes the immunological, biological and molecular basis of a wide range of infectious diseases, cancers and other disorders. QIMR has also built a strong research stream in epidemiology, the study of the environmental, lifestyle and genetic factors that contribute to disease incidence among populations.

QIMR is well known for its break-through skin cancer research.

 

Australasian College of Dermatologists

The Australasian College of Dermatologists represents qualified medical specialists who, through additional training, have obtained postgraduate qualifications to specialise in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of skin disease and skin cancers.

Dermatologists treat patients of all ages, from babies and children to adolescents and adults. Although diseases of the skin are many and varied, Australian dermatologists spend much of their time treating diseases caused by exposure to the sun.

Their website has a wealth of information on various skin diseases and disorders, along with ideas on how to prevent sun damage.

 

Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is a Federal Government agency, responsible for protecting the health and safety of people and the environment, from the harmful effects of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Their website contains excellent, detailed information on ultraviolet radiation and sun protection.

 

Queensland University of Technology - Australian Sun and Health Research Laboratory

This QUT Research team is dedicated to finding an understanding between the negative impacts of sun exposure, such as skin cancer and eye disorders, and the new emerging area of research into the positive impacts of sun exposure, namely Vitamin D synthesis.

 

Queensland Cancer Council

The Queensland Cancer Council raises funds dedicated to eliminating cancer, including skin cancer, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, treatment, patient care, prevention and early detection.

 

The Cancer Council Australia

The Cancer Council Australia is the national non-government cancer control organisation.

Its members are the eight state and territory cancer organisations, working together to undertake and fund cancer research, prevent and control cancer and provide information and support for people affected by cancer.

It acts nationally to advise government and other bodies on appropriate practice and policies for the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer, and is an advocate for the rights of cancer patients to best treatment and supportive care.

The Queensland Government is strongly committed to the prevention of skin cancer. You can find out more about skin cancer prevention and sun safety at Queensland Health's Sun Safety website.

Their site has a wealth of sun safety information available in a colourful, user-friendly format. It's a great resource for early childhood centres, schools, local government, sporting and recreation groups, workplaces, health professionals and the general public.
