Melanoma risk factors

While all of us are at risk of skin cancer, there are certain factors that may predispose some individuals to melanoma

The major risk factors associated with melanoma are:

Sun exposure - ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or artificial radiation from sources such as tanning salons increases the risk of melanoma.

Moles - moles are actually benign tumours, and can be precursors to melanoma.

Age - there is a higher risk of melanoma as you get older, although cases in young children have occurred.

Family history - family members who have had melanomas, certain inherited diseases and inherited fair complexions all increase the chances of melanomas occurring.

Immune system - a weak immune system caused by viruses, medications or medical conditions increases the risk of many cancers, including melanoma.

Irritants - radiation, trauma and carcinogenic chemicals are associated with increased risk of many cancers.
