SUN PROTECTION FOR BABIES AND TODDLERS
You don't need to be sunburnt to damage your skin. Even one case of overexposure to sunlight can result in irreversible damage. That's why it's so important for parents to make sun protection part of their child's routine from the very beginning. Young children's skin is more vulnerable to damage from sun exposure than adults.
Tips for keeping your child safe in the sun:
Never deliberately expose them to direct sunlight. Always try to keep babies and toddlers in the shade. Drape a cloth over their pram or stroller if necessary. Ensure they wear a wide brimmed or legionnaire style hat, and a shirt with sleeves and a collar.
Use 30+ broad spectrum sunscreen on all exposed skin. Make sure the brand you choose is water-resistant. Reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours.
Be a good role model!
Is sunscreen safe for babies?
Sunscreen is safe to use on babies. The Australasian College of Dermatologists recommends the use ofsunscreen at any age when there is exposure to thesun. Some children with very sensitive skin may develop irritations from some sunscreens. Shouldthis occur, simply try another brand or a sunscreen specifically formulated for children or people withsensitive skin.
If you continue to experience problems, seek medical advice.
Some sunscreens absorb the UV radiation to prevent it from getting into the skin. Others containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, reflect the UV away. These formulas are less likely to cause
irritation on sensitive skin.
